A Night To Remember...
Seeing & Juliet at ASU Gammage
Last night was a treat. My wife Karen, our youngest daughter Samantha, and I went over to ASU Gammage to see & Juliet. We've been to a lot of shows there over the years, but this one was something special.
The story takes Romeo and Juliet and flips it on its head. Instead of Juliet dying, she decides to live her own life — and the whole thing is told through pop songs. And not just any songs — these were the ones my girls grew up dancing to in the living room. Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson… all those big hits that I probably heard a thousand times back in the day. Hearing them live on that stage, with all the lights and dancing, was a blast.
The cast was just fantastic. The dancing was sharp, the voices were strong, and Mrs. Shakespeare — Anne Hathaway — stole the show for me. She had this mix of humor and confidence that made every scene better. I actually looked her up later and found out the real-life details about her and Shakespeare were right on. Pretty cool to see they took the time to get that right.
By the end, the whole audience was into it — clapping, laughing, and a few folks singing along. When we walked out after the curtain call, the three of us were still humming “Since U Been Gone.” It's been a lon
g time since a show left me smiling like that.
If you get the chance, go see & Juliet. It's funny, upbeat, and just plain fun. It's the kind of show that makes you feel young again — even if your knees say otherwise.
